Bennett Valley Traffic Increases are on the Horizon

by Chris Gralapp

One thousand new residential units in Glen Ellen? How will this impact Bennett Valley?

Currently, Bennett Valley Road is already a busy conduit between Glen Ellen and Santa Rosa, and is becoming busier every year. Since 2020, numerous accidents have happened on this, our main transit artery. Drivers in a hurry feel at liberty to speed, without care or concern given to the tortuous nature of the road system here.

Imagine daily traffic escalating due to the proposed development at the Sonoma Developmental Center (or Eldridge, as we called it growing up) in Glen Ellen. It will affect us all—because of more commuters traveling to Santa Rosa and beyond for work, but also legions of construction crews and heavy equipment trying to circumvent the Highway 12 bottlenecks, and using Bennett Valley as a shortcut. It may eventually trigger installation of traffic lights at several intersections, such as Grange Road and Sonoma Mountain Road.

Permit Sonoma itself has said in its report that the increased traffic is “a significant and unavoidable impact” of this development. The county has embraced this expanded plan in its Draft Environmental Impact Report issued in late August.

The best way to reduce impacts is to adopt a smaller project. The “Historic Preservation Alternative” is the smallest alternative, with 450 homes. This smaller, more reasonable footprint would also allow more open space, and allow for wildlife movement, and reduced wildfire risk.

Bennett Valley Fire Station is now equipped and staffed as an ALS (Advanced Life Support) station

Beginning September 17, The Bennett Valley station has been equipped and staffed as ALS (Advanced Life Support) stations upgrading it from BLS (Basic Life Support) stations. Enhancing services to the community!

A message from our Division Chief of EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Matt Windrem, “We are excited to increase the level of EMS response in the communities we serve from our neighborhood fire stations. Having a trained and equipped firefighter/paramedic will allow for the rapid provision of advanced care to those in need. Adding a firefighter/paramedic to the Bennett Valley fire station fulfills a commitment by the Sonoma County Fire District to the community for improved EMS services.”

2 Images of Larissa Goliti

Larissa Goliti (1939 – 2022)

We lost our neighbor and community leader Larissa Goliti on June 13, 2022. Larissa lived on Pressley Road for 30 years and loved our community. She served on the board of directors of the Bennett Valley Community Association from 2006 to 2021, during which time she was vice president for 10 years and membership coordinator for 14 years. Her leadership, guidance, and wisdom were invaluable.

Larissa was born in Kharkov, Ukraine, of Greek and Armenian ancestry. Late in World War II her family fled west in a horse cart desperately trying to get to the allied lines before the war ended. Her grandfather bribed soldiers at check points with bottles of slivovitz (a plum brandy). After living for several years in a United Nations refugee camp in Regensburg, Germany, Larissa’s family immigrated to Fresno, California, when she was about ten years old.

Larissa attended Fresno State University where she obtained a degree in Education. She married Edward Goliti, Jr., and raised her three children with him in Novato where the family owned and ran the horse ranch Redwood Stables. In 1989, she and Ed refurbished the old Dairyman’s Milling building on Petaluma Boulevard and shortly thereafter moved to Bennett Valley.

No one was prouder of this country than Larissa. She often hosted 4th of July parties, ostensibly to see the fireworks over Rohnert Park which were often obscured by fog. She would play at full blast Kate Smith’s God Bless America and John Philip Sousa marching tunes.

Larissa loved dogs, and nothing would light her up more than petting a dog

She was proud of her Armenian roots and helped organize and prepared most of the food for the annual summer picnics for Armenians of the North Bay.

Larissa had a generous spirit, a hair trigger smile, plenty of laughter, and abundant wisdom.

She is survived by her children, Annette Gutierrez, Susie Goliti, and John Goliti along with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In her memory, please consider helping Ukrainian refugees via The World Central Kitchen ot a donation to The Humane Society.

New broadband options in Bennett Valley

Starlink is here: DSL has been a plague on the valley for years. But finally, many people who signed up for StarLink internet have been receiving their dishes and getting download speeds >100Mbs.

Verizon 5G Home Internet now offered: Also - Several neighbors have been able to sign up for Verizon’s new high-speed wireless home internet. Speeds starting at 80Mbs up to 300Mbs for $25-50/month! More competition should increase options, quality, and speed.Tip: If it says not available for you - check to see if any nearby neighbors have it. Verizon can send you a test unit using a nearby address so you can try to see if it works. Could be a great primary or backup option.

New SoCo “Report it” site

Sonoma County has yet another new tool, with mobile apps. Apparently easier and better system to report and track requests to the county.

“SoCo Connect is an essential, modern service for Sonoma County that will help facilitate a rapid response to requests from our community members,” said James Gore, Chair of the Board of Supervisors. “It promotes civic engagement, performance measurement, and transparency in local government. But technology solutions only work if we use them, so we’re encouraging all community members to get involved and download the app as a convenient tool to share and track your concerns and requests.”

The upgraded system enables county residents, officials and staff to report, submit photos and monitor progress on information requests as well as standard work requests, including:

  • Guardrail damage

  • Hazardous trees

  • Litter/roadside debris

  • Plugged culverts

  • Pothole identification

  • Down road signs

  • Sign visibility problems

  • Landslides

  • Streetlight problems

  • Traffic signal concerns

  • Vegetation overgrowth

  • Abandoned vehicles

  • County code compliance issues

At a minimum, imagine if we used it to report all that roadside trash being dumped in Bennett Valley. Go forth, and report! (Download app for iPhone / Android or report issues on the SoCo Connect website)
