Landscaping with California Native Plants, Liz Parsons, California Native Plant Society, will be our speaker, September 19, 7:00 pm The natural beauty of our California landscape can enhance your own home. Come hear how to landscape using California's native plants. Liz Parsons brings her knowledge and years of experience with local conditions and availability of California native plants to our association meeting on September 19th, 7:00 pm, at the BV Grange Hall. She has been the coordinator of the local native plant society sale for 30 years and was awarded recognition of her many years of service to the society being selected as a Fellow of the California Native Plant Society. Her own garden in Kenwood includes Mediterranean plants, as well as California natives, and she is the president of the Santa Rosa Garden Club for the coming year.
California's unique geography has produced one of the world's loveliest and most diverse floras. Introduce a few native plants into your existing garden, or go totally native and fall in love with California's glorious diversity of native plants. You may benefit on many levels. Save Water. Once established, many California native plants need minimal irrigation beyond normal rainfall.
Low Maintenance. Native plants do best with some attention and care, but require less water, fertilizer, pruning, and less of your time to maintain them. Reduce Pesticides. Native plants have a natural defense against many pests and diseases, so they require less pesticides. Invite Wildlife. Native plants attract birds, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
Support Local Ecology. A native landscape can help provide an important bridge to nearby wild areas. Liz Parsons' presentation will show the diversity and beauty you can create in your own garden, using native plants. Bennett Valley Grange Spaghetti Dinner, Saturday, September 21, 5:00 pm Everyone is invited to our famous Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, Sept 21 starting at 5:00 pm, at the Bennett Valley Grange Hall, 4145 Grange Road. Cost is $10 per person. This includes a choice of meat sauce, pesto sauce and/or vegetarian sauce. You'll also receive French bread, salad, dessert, juice or water. You may also bring your own wine or beer, with no corkage fee.
In addition to the great food, there will be spirited music; an accordion player, Sheri Mignano, from the popular band Zighi Bacci, which recently performed at the Cotati Accordion Festival. Sheri will be playing her favorites on the accordion, ranging from Italian ballads to polka music; very danceable.
Join us for a good time and a great meal, for only $10, as a fundraiser for the upkeep of the Grange Hall building. We hope to see you there!
Bennett Valley Road Work Update Craig S. Harrison Road crews completed chip-sealing Bennett Valley Road between Grange Road and Old Bennett Ridge Road during July. This treatment should preserve this section of road for about 8 to 10 years. The striping on the narrow section of Bennett Valley Road was requested about a month ago, as first priority, because of the difficulty at night without markings, especially with the fast traffic. The county was able to move a contractor from another project, so this perilous section of the road could be completed by August 23. The remainder of Bennett Valley Road between Grange Road and the narrows are less of a safety issue and will be in the next phase of striping, probably in October or November. This will be so much easier to schedule next year when the county has their our own striping truck delivered and in service. It's now at the factory "being built".
The county hopes to repair the pavement on some of the 2.5 mile section of Bennett Valley Road from Old Bennett Ridge Road to Warm Springs Road during spring or summer 2014. At this time it seems unlikely that this project will be completed during a single year. Once this section has been repaired, the entire 2.5 mile stretch will be chip-sealed. In addition, the 200-yard section of Bennett Valley Road near the golf course was repaved by the City of Santa Rosa, also in July.
A reminder: you can call the county's Road Maintenance office (565-5100) to report any safety issues such as potholes or downed trees blocking Sonoma Valley Road Summit, Wednesday October 9 By Craig S. Harrison Save Our Sonoma Roads will be participating in a Road Summit in the City of Sonoma on Wednesday, October 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
The event is free and is will be held at Ramekins Culinary School and Inn, 450 W. Spain Street, Sonoma. The event is convened and organized by Sonoma Valley resident Gina Cuclis. In addition to SOSroads, participants will include First District Supervisor Susan Gorin and director of the Sonoma County Department of Transportation and Public Works, Susan Klassen.
Don't miss this opportunity to learn about plans to fix our deteriorating county roads and to ask questions of those responsible for making decisions on this issue. Sonoma County Ranks In Top 1/3 For Gas Taxes...., But Near Bottom For Road Conditions, SOSroads.org August Newsletter, 2013 Ever since we began our efforts at SOSroads we have questioned why Sonoma County roads are so much worse than other county roads in California, as well as county roads in other states.
One of the main reasons given by county officials is that Sonoma County has a large road network. Yet 17 other counties have road systems with more miles, in some cases over twice as many miles, as Sonoma County. SOSroads analyzed the state gas taxes received by each county in California for the fiscal year that ended on June 30. Sonoma County ranks 18th of 58 California counties in terms of gas tax revenue per mile. Sonoma County received $12.86 million, which calculates to about $9,300 per mile for its 1,383 mile road system. About 70 percent of California counties get less tax revenue per mile but have roads in much better condition. For example, Fresno County gets only about $6,000 per mile yet public documents indicate that its pavement condition index (PCI) is in the high 60s.
Fresno County officials manage a 3,500 mile road system. We rarely hear serious complaints about the roads in other counties that receive much less funding per mile than Sonoma, including San Luis Obispo ($6,300), Humboldt ($4,400), Glenn ($3,000) and Tulare ($4,100). We will continue to ask county officials why Sonoma County ranks near the bottom of California's 58 counties for road conditions while ranking in the top third for road funding. The explanations to date (an unusually large road system; a state gas tax formula that disadvantages Sonoma County; roads that were originally constructed poorly compared to other counties) do not seem to withstand scrutiny.
Understanding how our county road system became so dilapidated is important to ensuring that we get the best results for our investments to improve our roads. Call Sandy Sandine at 579-0282. Please Sign The Petition to Fix Sonoma Mountain Road and Pressley Road By Steve Soldis, Better Roads For Bennett Valley Coalition Please join over 500 friends and neighbors who have already signed the petition that asks the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors and the Transportation and Public Works Department to fix Sonoma Mountain and Pressley Roads. The petition can be downloaded from the home page of the BVCA web site: http://bennettvalley.org.
The Transportation and Public Works Department has classified large sections of Sonoma Mountain Road and Pressley Road to be in "failed," "poor," or "at-risk" condition. We think all residents or users of these are concerned about their continuing deterioration. The Better Roads For Bennett Valley Coalition will present the petitions to the supervisors during September, and the more names that we can submit the more likely the county officials will act favorably to address this problem.
Please have all adults in your household sign the petition and return to me by email, fax or US mail at the indicated addresses at the bottom of the petition. 3

Bennett Valley Call Log July/August By Lieutenant Matt Tognozzi Structure Fire - 1 Vehicle Fire - O Grass Fire - 1 Medical Aid - 24 Vehicle Accident - 3 Public Assist - 2 Strike Team - 2 Other Type Calls - 8 Total - 41 (1 strike team call cancelled out) Halloween Safety By Lieutenant Matt Tognozzi Tips for Choosing the Right Costumes: • Purchase costumes made of flame retardant material. (Check the label) • Keep hemlines short enough to prevent tripping and avoid loose, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.
• To be seen easily, costumes should be made of a light color material. • Use glow in the dark reflective tape on your costume. • Use make-up rather than masks which could obstruct vision. Tips for Halloween Night: • Use battery powered lights - never use candles to light jack-o-lanterns.
• Instruct children to stay away from open flames. • Remove objects from the yard that present a hazard to children. (garden tools, hoses, etc.) • Be extremely careful with cornstalks and other harvest season items. Keep them away from sources of heat. Don't let them block doorways or stairs.
• Do not allow children to carry sharp sticks or other objects which could cause injury to others. • If you are driving on Halloween, take care...watch out for trick-or-treaters who will be too busy to watch out for you. • Closely inspect all candy before allowing children to eat it. Discard any unwrapped treats from a stranger. If in doubt, throw it out.

A Visit With Ann (Pisenti) Burow, Discussing Her Lifelong Bennett Valley Experiences By Marilee Jensen I decided it was time to visit Ann Burow again. She will celebrate her 108th birthday in a little more than a month. She moved out of Bennett Valley about two years ago, but not very far away, so that she could remain independent with a little extra help and not interfere with her family's daily lives. As she told me in this visit on September 5, she is very happy where she's living but she does miss Bennett Valley. She then added, "I love Bennett Valley".
I made the appointment to meet her a couple of days in advance, and when I arrived, she was waiting for me at the front door, looking lovely, with her earrings and a matching deep purple skirt, jacket and blouse. After greeting each other, we found a place where we could converse quietly and privately. She manages her walker comfortably on her own to get to where she wants to go. As always, it was delightful visiting with her. There was someone playing piano in the background and Ann made a point of saying music was always a part of her life, starting with her father and his two brothers, who played in the Oakland Symphony. One of Ann's great grandsons who attends Lewis and Clark College in Oregon is a composer!. Ann then mentioned she always loves to hear the song, "The Isle of Capri." She then added that she's had "a fun life." To give you a little background, Ann Burow was born in Oakland, California, on October 23, 1905', but in 1924, at the age of 19, she was married and moved to her husband's dairy farm in Bennett Valley, where there were unpaved country roads. "Ann was a city girl who had to learn to cook on a wood stove and there was no electricity. Food was kept in an icebox with ice delivered". On the farm she and her husband raised two daughters, Luella and Gwen. She had her first child in about 19261 . Both of her daughters have had children, too. At this time, Luella is living in Folsom, but Gwen lives nearby in Santa Rosa, and visits Ann often.
During our visit, Ann talked quite a bit about her various siblings in the area, such as Joe Pisenti and Bill Pisenti. She said she had 12 siblings plus two more that died as children. In 1925, Ann joined the Bennett Valley Grange, and within a year, the members elected her as their Secretary 2. She stayed in that position for a total of 66 years, until December 31, 1992. She has a copy of her resignation letter in a journal she keeps with "poetic and other writing". Ann has put together a book on the Grange history called "66 years" that her daughter is preserving'. One of her exciting moments with the Bennett Valley Grange was in 1973, when this Grange celebrated its 100th birthday. Ann wrote every other Grange in the State about this momentous date for the oldest continuously operating Grange in the nation.
State Grange Master Bob McFarland says, "Ann is our oldest Grange member in the nation." And quotes Ann as saying simply "We have history here." The nicest part of this visit was just enjoying being with Ann, and hearing her many memories. Even though I've enjoyed meeting with Ann many times over the 35 years I've lived in Bennett Valley, I was still amazed that at almost 108 years old, she still has such vitality and clarity combined with her sweetness and happiness. She left me with such a good feeling. At the end of our visit she insisted on walking me to the door, which I appreciated and enjoyed, too. I'm really looking forward to another visit with her, soon.
