Memo From The Board

Board Election Update

Grateful acknowledgement goes to Bill Wright who expertly and assiduously served as our president for the past two years. Much was accomplished under his watchful leadership, and we are thankful that he has agreed to another term as a member of our board. Sam Dakin was elected to the seat vacated by Wells Wagner. Sam, who is on the Board of Dakin Toy Co., brings new energy and enthusiasm to his position.

The Board elected new officers as indicated above.

Design Review Committee

APPOINTEES This important committee, at long last, has received Board of Supervisor's approval of two candidates to fill its vacancies. Carol Marie Carvagal, a 20 year resident residing in the Enterprise area, is a sculptress and real estate appraiser. Her fine arts training makes her uniquely valuable in assisting to preserve the visual amenity of the Valley.

Wells Wagner, a viticulturist, whose vineContinued on page 2 Goals and Issues 1991 brings to the Bennett Valley Homeowners Association Board of Directors some new faces on the board and in some of the officer positions. However, there is good continuity on the board and a depth of experience such that we can all be assured the various issues to be faced will be dealt with appropriately. The primary objective of our association remains the promotion and preservation of the rural and residential character and natural environment of Bennett Valley. We remain opposed to any proposal for a Highway 12 connector through the Valley as well as any other proposal that threatens the rural nature of the Valley.

In addition to the regular issues addressed by the board such as zoning, construction permits, variances, etc., we are investigating the options available to Valley residents for water supply in the event of natural disaster. At the present time there are no plans or resources for emergency water in the event of disaster. Residents are advised to develop their own family resources for both food and water in the event of earthquake or other disaster. However, the Bennett Valley Fire District is looking into the issue in 1991 and we on the Homeowners Association board will be cooperating with the fire district on the issue. Our goal is to develop an emergency water supply for Valley residents to be made available in the event of an emergency.

The Homeowners Association Board looks forward to a productive year. Please support your association with your dues and suggestions. Kevin McCarthy President

Design Review Committee

(Continued) yard is adjacent to Mantanza Creek Winery, has been active in Valley affairs since he arrived here with his family 5 1/2 years ago. While he was serving on the B.V. Homeowner's Board, he chaired the Transportation and Safety Committee that so successfully worked with Supervisor Janet Nicholas to obtain new road surfaces, speed signs, and center lines and reflectors along Bennett Valley Rd. Due to his committee's efforts, there has been 25% fewer accidents in 1990 than in previous years.

Hooray and thanks to the new and old members of the Design Review Committee for their willingness to keep assuring that land use policies are not circumvented.

Bennett Valley

Fire Protection District

Fire Chief's Message Dear Residents, In October the Fire District took delivery of a 1990 Type I Fire Engine manufactured by Gurman in Roanoke, Virginia. This fire engine greatly enhances our fire protection capabilities and comes to us only after three years of planning and hard work. As part of our capital replacement plan, Engine #7881 was purchased utilizing revenue appropriated from the Fire Districts Benefit Assessment. This fire engine was designed and built with the specific types of fires and terrain in the Bennett Valley area, with emphasis on dependability, and the ability to be extremely effective in both structural fires and the wildland/urban interface fires we are so often faced with.

In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who attended and contributed to the last Bennett Valley Community Day in August of 1990. The event was very successiul and thanks to your support we now have in service the complete set of "Jaws of Life". All firefighters have received in-service training and are capable of using the equipment. Already we have proven the importance and effectiveness of the Jaws during a recent vehicle accident at the intersection of Bennett Valley Rd. and Sonoma Mountain Road.

The Annual Bennett Valley Volunteer Firefighters Breakfast will be April 21st at the fire station. All equipment will be on display. We look forward to seeing you. Greg L. Martin Fire Chief, B.V.F.P.D. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of you who have Loved ones and friends in the Gulf. Let us continually "Think Peace" so that there may be a speedy resolution.
