Memo From The Board

The past quarter has been an eventful one for Bennett Valley. The fire department controversy rages on, with charges and counter-charges flying like hornets from a clubbed nest. The stakes are high for Bennett Valley residents and property owners, so familiarize yourself with the issues and vote in the July recall election.

There's no room for apathy. Another controversy of narrower scope but equal intensity surrounded the expansion Glen Winery's capacity from 6000 to 15000 gallons. Your Board listened to arguments pro and con during three different meetings before deciding on a split vote to recommend approval. The County Board of Zoning Adjustments concurred with our recommendation and approved the proposal, adding some extra conditions to assure compliance.

The opposition was not mollified, however, and has formed its own homeowners association (interpriseSonoma Mountain Road) to counter the recommendation of the BHA. It is unknown at this writing whether or not the new association will appeal the BZA's decision to the Board of Supervisors.

Be that as it may, we hope that when the dust settles they will see that their interests will best be served by continuing to channel their input through BHA, to whatever independent activity they wish to undertake. It would seem appropriate for them to consider formally or informally running their own candidate(s) for the BHA Board in the next election.

Certainly there will be more on which we agree than disagree, and a unified voice with wider representation will speak with more authority to the powers-that-be. The Deerfield Subdivision (former Bruggemann Ranch adjacent to the city limits) went to the County Projects Review and Advisory Committee on April 18.

The question of the extension of Summerfiald Road was raised, but PRAC did not pass on to the Planning Commission any recommendation that an easement be dedicated for that purpose. The results of the opinion poll vote sought in the last Bennett Valiey VOICE showed 109 respondents opposed to requiring the dedication of the extension easement, and 52 in favor.

As promised, those results will be passed on to the Planning Commission when it hears the issue on May 2. PRAC significantly watered down the BVIA recommendation (endorsed by the Planning Department) that a scenic easement be required over the agricultural land bordering Matanzas Creek, (This is a separate issue, not to be confused with the extension proposal.) PRAC said only that there should be no building on the open land southwest of the creek and visible from Bennett Valley Road, suggesting somewhat equivocally that this be done by way of a This left open the question of whether or not there should be an extra layer of protection (beyond mere zoning) for this key buffer parcel adjacent to the This issue of the VOICE includes a membership list of those who paid their dues by the February deadline.
